What should I look for in an accountant?
When searching for an accountant, it is important to ensure they are registered with a professional accounting body and have the right qualifications.
If you’re looking for a personal accountant for tax returns, look for someone who has had experience doing tax returns for people in the same occupation as you. This way they will be knowledgeable about what you can and can’t claim on your tax returns.
If you’re looking for an accountant for your business check if the accounting firm has handled clients in the same industry as you before and check whether or not they are able to handle the size of your company especially if it is still growing. The last thing you want is a firm who cannot cope with your growing business.
Before you hire an accountant you may contact them for a consultation and this is where you can ask them questions about their expertise and qualifications. A good accountant will not rush through processes and will explain each step to you so you can understand. They should know what you or your businesses goals are so they can provide you with the best personalised solutions.
LLB Accountants are a team of licensed tax agents, Certified Public Accountants (CPA) and Chartered Accountants (CA). Throughout our 10 years of operation we have worked with clients in a range of industries including retail, manufacturing, transport, mining, pharmaceutical, health care, childcare and many more. We always take the time to sit down with our clients to get to know them and/or their business better in order to give the most cost effective and efficient solutions.
What questions should I ask my accountant?
Before seeing your accountant, it is good to come prepared with some questions to find out if they are suitable for you or your business. Some questions you may ask an accountant are:
- What industries have you worked with?
- How much do you charge?
- What is the average size of your clients?
- Will you be able to handle the size of my business?
- What do you specialise in?
- What services do you provide?
- What can I claim in term of work deductions?
- How long has the firm been operating for?
- How do you do your consultations? In person, phone or video conference?
What qualifications does my accountants need to have?
In Australia accountants must be a member of a professional accounting body such as:
Who can lodge my tax returns?
Only tax agents registered with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) Register can lodge your tax returns. If you’re seeing an accountant, make sure they are also registered as a tax agent. All of the accountants at LLB are also registered tax agents as shown on the TPB website.
Do I need to hire an accountant for my tax returns?
Hiring an accountant (who is also a tax agent) to do your tax returns is not compulsory but can be advantageous. Tax agents are knowledgeable about industry specific deductions and can maximise your return while being compliant with the ATO. Our tax agents have been doing tax returns for over 10 years and can help you prepare and lodge your tax returns with stress-free experience. If you have multiple deductions and expenses, tax returns can be confusing and having a tax agent will eliminate mistakes made and may get you a better tax result.
Should I hire an accountant for my small business?
Small business owners can benefit hugely when engaging an accountant for their business as small business owners usually handle everything in your business. Therefore, the least you should avoid is to do your own accounting stress. Accountants can take care of bookkeeping, business activity statement (BAS) preparation, pay as you go (PAYG) instalments, super payment, business structure advisory, budgeting & financial planning, business setup and Export Market Development Grant (EMDG) lodgements.
Not only do accountants take care of all the numbers but they can also provide you with advice and information on how your business can save more money. With the law constantly changing and new policies coming into play, accountants can keep you up to date with the latest changes in legislation and will ensure you are being compliant to the law. By hiring an accountant you can focus on your business and leave all the financial matters to the accounting firm.
