Originally a swamp land by a lagoon, the swamps at Zetland were drained off and built into the Victoria Park Racecourse in the 1900s. After World War II, the racecourse was closed and the site was redeveloped into an industrial area. Parts of the site were subsequently further developed into housing in the 1990s. Located about 4 kilometres south of Sydney central business district, Zetland is today largely an industrial suburb with areas of medium to high density housing. The suburb’s name was derived from Thomas Dundas’ title. He was the second Earl of Zetland.
Zetland has a population of about 3,810, the average age of which is relatively young at 31 years against the national average of 37 years. Approximately 43% of the residents are Australia-born.
