Zetland History

Originally a swamp land by a lagoon, the swamps at Zetland were drained off and built into the Victoria Park Racecourse in the 1900s. After World War II, the racecourse was closed and the site was redeveloped into an industrial area. Parts of the site were subsequently further developed into housing in the 1990s. Located about 4 kilometres south of Sydney central business district, Zetland is today largely an industrial suburb with areas of medium to high density housing. The suburb’s name was derived from Thomas Dundas’ title. He was the second Earl of Zetland.

Zetland has a population of about 3,810, the average age of which is relatively young at 31 years against the national average of 37 years. Approximately 43% of the residents are Australia-born. Of the overseas-born, about 12% are from China. The rest are from England, New Zealand and various Asian countries. The median weekly income of individuals is about $1,051 and that of households is about $1,870. About 36% of residents work as professionals, 20% hold managerial positions and 14% employed in administrative roles.

Zetland has a good road network which makes it is easily accessible by bus and car to the city and beyond. Cars, buses and train are main mode of transport for residents. The main train station for Zetland residents is the Green Square station, located at the North Western part along Botany Road, which runs regular services to the Central train station and the Airport.

Centres of Commerce

Located at Victoria Park off Gadigal Avenue, the Green Square markets where food, local produce, handmade clothes and accessories and other products are sold amid live music every Saturday is popular with locals and visitors alike. Throughout Zetland, various small businesses offer food and fresh produce to residents. The nearest major supermarkets in Alexandria and Rosebery are accessible to residents. Zetland is currently undergoing gentrification where construction of modern retail, business and residential developments are in progress.
