Woolwich History

Originally known as “Mookaboola” in aboriginal language, the suburb name was changed to Woolwich during the European settlement. Woolwich was taken from the name of a place in London. Located about 11 kilometres north west of Sydney central business district, Woolwich sits on the peninsula jutting out from Hunters Hill.


With only 815 inhabitants, Woolwich is a small residential suburb. The average age of residents is 49 years which is 12 years above the national average. Most of the residents are of English, Australian, Irish, Scottish and Italian descent.
