Originally known as “Mookaboola” in aboriginal language, the suburb name was changed to Woolwich during the European settlement. Woolwich was taken from the name of a place in London. Located about 11 kilometres north west of Sydney central business district, Woolwich sits on the peninsula jutting out from Hunters Hill.
