The suburb of Westmead forms part of the Greater Western Sydney region and sits approximately 26 kilometres westward of the CBD. The area has a long history stretching back to the arrival of the British settlers and was initially part of Government House. Orchards were widespread before more and more expansions transformed the suburb into a blend of residential and commercial areas.
2011 saw the population density in Westmead to be at about 14,171. This number has seen to be on a steady increase. The suburb is made up mainly of younger residents, with a median age of 31 years, considerably below the average of NSW. Apart from the locals which make up the population, there is also a sizeable Indian community. Other residents include the Chinese and Irish people. Professional services are the main jobs held by the bulk of its residents with the rest working in administration, management and in the trade industry.
Westmead railway station is on the Cumberland and Western lines of the Sydney rail network which has services running to Penrith as well as to Sydney city. Buses are also abundant in the area with recurrent services travelling to the surrounding suburbs of Blacktown, Merrylands and Parramatta. Westmead is also easily accessible by car, with the Great Western Highway and M4 motorway located within the vicinity.
Westmead Hospital is a major hospital in Western Sydney. Many residents travel to neighbouring suburb Parramatta for their daily essentials as it features a large Westfield shopping complex.
The most popular types of housing in Westmead are apartment units. Other less common dwellings includes separate houses and semi-detached houses.
