General Information

At just 30km, Sutherland is ideally located not too far away from Sydney city.
The first industry to thrive in the area was the timber cutting industry due to the heavily forested environment. Thomas Holt who was a major landowner, started many industry in the area including coal mining and oyster farming. Over time, the area expanded and prospered into the modern-day Sutherland.

Demographics

2011 recorded Sutherland to have a population of around 9,923 people where the average age was found to be 36 years just a bit below the average of NSW. Locals make up the bulk of its people with the remainder hailing from Europe and Asia.
Most residents are employed full time in the professional fields followed by people in administrative positions, technicians, managers and community workers.

Transport

Sutherland railway station is on the Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra line. There are regular bus services to nearby Miranda and Cronulla, and those further away. The Princes Highway and Kingsway are major roads in the Sutherland Shire area and frequently used by motorists.

Commercial area

Sutherland has a mixture of residential and commercial areas. Most of the commercial activity is located close to the train station, featuring a wide variety of stores with many goods and services available.

Housing

The most popular form of housing in Sutherland are units and apartments, comprising about 60%. Separate houses account for around 27% and the remainder are semi-detached dwellings.
