St Leonards History
St Leonards is situated about 5 kilometres from the Sydney CBD. In the early days, St Leonards’ suburb grounds spanned the whole area from Gore Hill to and including the present North Sydney suburb site. In 1883 the site of St Leonards’ town centre was demarcated and became the suburb of North Sydney today. St Leonards was named after Thomas Townsend, the first Viscount Sydney of St Leonards.
