Potts Point History
Potts Point is a densely populated suburb located about 3 kilometers east of the Sydney central business district. In the early days, Joseph Hyde Potts named large tracts of land (formerly known as Woolloomooloo Hill) that he owned, as Potts Point. Attracted by the area's favourable location, developers gradually build amenities such as hostels, bars, restaurants, nightclubs, strip clubs and adult bookstores.
Potts Point’s population is about 6,862 people of which 58% were born in Australia. The residents are mainly of English, New Zealander, American, French and German descent. The median age of residents is 35 years. Potts Point’s residents are mainly professionals (36%), managers (17%) and administrative workers (12%). The rest are mainly community workers, technicians and tradesmen and salespersons. Individuals’ median weekly income is $1,103 while families’ median weekly income is $2,532.
The residents are well served by buses and trains. The nearby Kings Cross railway station connects residents to the Sydney Trains network. Many residents commute by car. Because of its proximity to commercial areas, walking is also a popular way of getting around.
