General Information

Parramatta is in the Greater Western Sydney region, located about 23 kilometres from the CBD.
The name of the suburb originated from the Aborigines, and means ‘the place where the eels lie down’ as eels along with other marine life are common in the area.
Parramatta is the second oldest city in Australia after Sydney, founded in 1788. The area was chosen as the ideal place to grow food after the European settlement. Over the years, it continued to develop, and is one of the largest business district in Sydney.

Parramatta is one of the largest suburbs in Sydney, with a population of 19,745. It is made up of mostly younger residents with a median age of 30 years, compared with the NSW median age of 38 years.
Most of the people are of Indian, Chinese, English, Australian and Lebanese descent.
The most common professions are clerical staff, professionals, technicians and managers.

Being a busy commercial district, public transport is widely available. Parramatta station is on two separate lines of the rail network. There are also regular bus services to neighbouring suburbs and the CBD.
The suburb is easily accessible, with the M4 motorway and Parramatta Road two major thoroughfare in the region.

Commercial area

A major shopping centre, Westfield Parramatta, has a wide range of stores with an abundance of products available. In addition, a busy retail and commercial district is in the vicinity of Westfield.

The most common type of housing in Parramatta are units and apartments. The remainder is comprised of separate houses and semi-detached housing.
