General Information

Within the St George region of Sydney, located 20 kilometres from the CBD sits the suburb of Mortdale. Named after an industrialist, Thomas Mort pioneered the refrigeration of meat. Although Mortdale the railway station opened in 1897, many developments occurred during the 20th century and became a predominantly residential suburb.


Mortdale has a population density of approximately 9,702 people with a median age of 36 just slightly below the average in Australia. Most of the residents’ descents are Australian, English, Chinese, Irish and Scottish. Many people are employed in the field of professionals, clerical workers, technicians, managers and community workers.


Mortdale station is on the Eastern suburbs and Illawarra line of the rail network in Sydney. The suburb is also served by buses, with regular services to nearby Hurstville and Bankstown.
Forest Road and King Georges Road are frequently travelled by motorists.

Commercial area

There are many retail stores, cafes and restaurants on Morts Road and nearby streets. Mortdale RSL club is also located in the vicinity on the corner of Macquarie place and The Strand.


Just less than 50% of residential housing in Mortdale are houses. Units and apartments comprise about 40% with the remainder a combination of townhouses and other types of dwellings.
