Leichhardt History

Located about 5 kilometres from the central business district, Leichhardt is in the administrative centre for local government area of Leichhardt.
Before the European settlement, Leichhardt was occupied by aboriginal people belonging to the Wangal band of the Dharug (Eora) language group. The coastal aboriginals around city were given the name “Eora” which means from this place. These words were frequently used by local aboriginal people to describe the Europeans as a reminder of where they originally came from.


The population of Leichhardt is about 13,520 of which the majority or 65% were born in Australia. The residents were mainly of ancestries from England, New Zealand, Ireland and China.
The median age of the residents is 36 years against the national average of 37 years. The main occupation of residents are professionals and managers. The median weekly income are $942 (individuals) and $2,415 (families).


Leichhardt has a good network of main roads such as Parramatta Road, Balmain Road, Norton Street, Marion Street and Catherine Street.
