Eveleigh History

In the early days, much of Redfern suburb was known as Eveleigh, and Redfern railway station was then known as Eveleigh railway station. Surrounded by North Newtown, Erskineville, Redfern, Alexandria and Chippendale, Everleigh was home to workshop complexes engaged in the manufacturing, servicing and repairing of steam locomotives. The complexes had since been relocated to Enfield in the 1980s. Named after the estate of Lieutenant J R Holden in England, Eveleigh is situated about 3 kilometres from Sydney central business district.

Demographics

Besides having a small population of about 473, Eveleigh’s residents are relatively young with a median age of 30 years, most of whom are in the age group of 20 to 39 years. The residents are mainly of English (21%), Australian (18%), Chinese (9%), Irish (8%) and Vietnamese (7%) ancestr. The Australian born residents form about 56%.

Transport

Eveleigh is well served by trains and buses. The closest railway stations from Eveleigh are Redfern and Macdonald Town stations. Many bus services run to the city and surrounding suburbs. Cars are popular mode of transport.

Centre of Commerce

The Eveleigh Farmers’ Market which opens every Saturdays bustles with activities of local farmers and food producers selling their produce and food products. Supermarkets, cafes and retail shops sprawl the area around Chalmers St, King St and Central Avenue.
