Erskineville History

Erskineville was named after Erskine Villa, the home of Wesleyan minister, Reverend George Erskine, built in 1830. In nineteenth century, market gardening and brick making were main industries and small Victorian terrace homes were built for the workers. Having undergone many changes, including the gentrification in 1970, the suburb had attracted many new residents to its village atmosphere. Located about 3 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD and surrounded by Newton, Eveleigh, St Peters and Alexandria, Erskineville is today a popular residential suburb close to the city.
