Double Bay history

Located about 4 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district, Double Bay is a harbourside suburb. It was known as Double Bay because of its location at the geographical twin bay formation between Point Piper and Darling Point facing Sydney Harbour. After the European Settlement in 1788, the waterfront was used as a shelter for fishermen. Cattle rearing and farming were the main preoccupation of settlors. These farming areas extended into districts currently known as Woollahra, Bondi Junction, and Point Piper.
