History of Cowan

Cowan is commonly considered to be the northernmost suburb of Greater Sydney. It is situated approximately 40 kilometres north of the Sydney CBD. The name ‘Cowan’ is an Aboriginal word that means big water, a fitting description given that Hawkesbury River is directly adjacent to the suburb.

Cowan is a small suburb with only 544 people whose median age of 36 years is slightly lower than the NSW median of 38 years. The most common descendants in Cowan are Australian, English, Irish, Scottish and German. Professionals, technicians, clerical and community staff are the most popular occupations.

Cowan is served by both buses and trains. The train station and bus stops are conveniently located in close proximity on Pacific Highway.
From Cowan, the Pacific Highway is the main arterial road which joins with the bigger Pacific Motorway just north and south of the suburb.

A general store serves the local community in Cowan, while a renowned pie shop ‘Pie in the sky’ is located just north of Cowan, as featured in the film Lantana.

Separate housing is the most common type of residential dwellings in Cowan. The remainder consists of townhouses and other types of dwellings.
