History of Casula

Casula is a south-western Sydney suburb located 35 kilometres from the Sydney CBD. The original settlers of the area were the ‘Tharawal’ people. ‘Tharawal’ refers to the people who belong to the Greater Southern and South-Western areas of Sydney. Casula was first settled by agriculturalists where the area was primarily used for farming. As the area was heavily farmed, the area only started to urbanise in the late 1950s.

Casula has about 15 thousand residents, with a median age slightly less than NSW at 34 years. Just over half of its residents were born in Australia with others coming from places including Iraq, India and Fiji. Apart from English, other languages spoken include Hindi, Spanish and Italian.

Casula is surrounded on the West and North by the M5 South Western Motorway extending to the North Shore and central Sydney. Additionally, the Hume Highway runs through the heart of Casula. There are many bus services running through the suburb and along Hume Highway. Casula station is located on the eastern part of the suburb and is on the Airport, Inner west & South line of the Sydney train network.

Apart from the small stores and small businesses located across the suburb, the main commercial area for the suburb is Casula Mall located at the heart of the suburb offering customers a wide range of daily essentials including 40 speciality stores and a Coles supermarket.

Privately owned houses dominate the southern and central areas of the suburb, forming about three-quarters of residential dwellings in the suburb. The remainder consists mostly of semi-detached housing.
