History of Carramar

30 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD lies Carramar, one of Sydney’s suburban areas. The word “Carramar” comes from Aboriginal term which means “shades of trees”. Initially known Carramar, during the development of the railway station, it was known as South Fairfield but was later changed back to Carramar in 1926.

Demographics

More than 3440 residents call Carramar home. The median age of 37 years is similar to NSW’s median age. Many of the residents in the suburb are of Vietnamese, Chinese, Australian, English and Lebanese descent.

Transport

Hume highway borders the south of the suburb, providing drivers easy access to other parts of Sydney. Carramar railway station is centrally located in the suburb along Carramar Avenue. There are also bus services available within the suburb along The Horsley Drive.

Commerce

Carramar features a small industrial area and a shopping strip along Wattle Avenue that provides the local community with most basic essentials.

Housing

Carramar is filled with a mix of private and public houses, with individual housing making up just over 40% of all dwellings. Units are the most popular type of housing, accounting for about 50%.
