Camperdown was named by Governor William Bligh after the Battle of Camperdown (or Camperduin in Dutch). The suburb is located about 4 kilometres south-west of the Sydney CBD. Its history can be traced back to the early 19th century when it was developed as a residential and farming area.
Located within Camperdown today are the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the University of Sydney. It was once home to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children which had been relocated next to Westmead Hospital, and the hospital grounds were redeveloped into apartment complexes.
