Camperdown History

Camperdown was named by Governor William Bligh after the Battle of Camperdown (or Camperduin in Dutch). The suburb is located about 4 kilometres south-west of the Sydney CBD. Its history can be traced back to the early 19th century when it was developed as a residential and farming area.
Located within Camperdown today are the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the University of Sydney. It was once home to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children which had been relocated next to Westmead Hospital, and the hospital grounds were redeveloped into apartment complexes.

The population of Camperdown is about 7,866. Most of the residents are from England, New Zealand, United State of America and Malaysia. With about 58% of the residents in the 20 to 39 age group, the population is relatively young whose median age is 30 years. A majority or 61% of the workforce holds professional and managerial jobs. The median weekly income is $944 for individuals and $2,581 for families.

As the suburb is well connected by roads to the city via Broadway and George Streets, cars and buses are popular modes of transport. In addition, the Princes Highway which goes through Camperdown, provides convenient access for large and heavy vehicles. The nearest railway stations are the Newtown and Macdonaldtown stations which provide rail access to residents.

Centres of Commerce

Various small businesses, shops and retail outlets scattered all over Camperdown serve the local community. Residents have a choice to shop at the nearby Broadway shopping centre where the big supermarkets and departmental stores are located.
