History of Blacktown

Blacktown is approximately 34 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD. It was originally occupied by the Darug people before the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. Expansion started to take place around 1823, and a post office was established in 1862.

In 2011, Blacktown recorded a population of about 301,100 residents and is one of the largest suburbs in Sydney. Approximately half of its residents are Australian born, with other popular countries including the Philippines, India and South Africa.

The suburb of Blacktown is a major transportation hub. The M4 motorway is located to the South and the M7 to the North, both linking up directly to the city. Blacktown station is also located in the heart of the suburb with services running to the city, Penrith and Emu Plains. There is also a bus terminal located at Blacktown train station with frequent services to the surrounding areas.

Blacktown is a major commercial area and is home to the major shopping complex Westpoint Blacktown. It offers customers a very diverse range of shopping needs. In addition, there are a few clubs and pubs located nearby, with smaller shops located throughout the suburb.

Blacktown is preferred by many locals due to the close proximity to Westpoint Blacktown. Most of the residential dwellings in Blacktown are detached houses.
