History of Bangor
Bangor is a southern Sydney suburb, situated approximately 28 kilometres from the Sydney CBD. It was named by the land owner Owen Jones after Bangor in Wales, his birthplace.
After a recent development of Bangor, the streets were renamed reflecting an Aboriginal theme.
Bangor’s population is approximately 5,620 and its median age is 40 years. Most of the residents are of Australian, English, Irish, Scottish and Italian descent. The most common occupations are professionals, clerical staff, managers, technicians and retail workers.
The closest train station is the Sutherland station, which is on the Illawarra line of the Sydney Trains network. Veolia and Transdev provide bus services that connect Bangor to other suburbs in the south and south western Sydney areas.
Bangor is also easily accessible by car, with Menai Road being the main thoroughfare.
A small shopping centre on Yala Road provides the local community with basic essentials. There are larger shopping complexes in nearby Menai and Miranda, which are easily accessible by both car and bus.
Most of the dwellings in Bangor are separate houses, with townhouses and units/apartments forming the remainder of residential dwellings.
