General information of Abbotsbury

Abbotsbury is a suburb located in the Greater Western Sydney area about 39 kilometres from the Sydney CBD. It was named in 1991 after Major Edward Abbott, a Canadian born soldier who arrived in 1790. After being granted land in 1806, he later sold it to William Browne in 1810. Then in the late 1800s, the land was subdivided into small farms and classified as a rural area, but eventually it became a residential area in the late 1900s due to an increase in population and demand for houses.

Demographics

The population of Abbotsbury is approximately 4,194. The median age is 35 years, which is slightly lower than the NSW average of 38 years. The background of the residents include Italian, Australian, English, Assyrian and Croatian. Most of the residents are employed as clerical staff, technicians, professionals and managers.

Transport

Many residents commute to and from work and to other places by private vehicle. The suburb is served by three Sydney bus operators. Bus is the main form of public transportation.

Commerce

Although situated away from the busy Sydney centre, the suburb nevertheless have basic needs provided by local businesses. There is a small shopping complex, which has businesses including a grocery store, hairdressers, café and restaurant. For other shopping needs, there is a larger Stockland shopping centre located in Wetherill Park, which is a short drive away.

Housing

As the suburb is situated further out from the Sydney CBD where land is more abundant than other Sydney suburbs, most of the dwellings in Abbotsbury are detached houses. A very small proportion of properties are semi-detached houses or flats.
